چکیده

Collisionless shock waves in supernova remnants and the solar wind heat electrons less effectively than they ions, as is predicted by kinetic simulations. However, values of T$_e$/T$_p$ inferred from H alpha profiles remnant shocks behave differently a function Mach number or Alfv\'{e}n what measured Here we determine for using profiles, speeds proper motions, electron temperatures X-ray spectra. We also improve estimates sound speed used to numbers. find that determinations are robust discrepancies among shocks, computer-simulated remain. discuss some possible contributing factors, including precursors, turbulence varying preshock conditions.

Critical Self-Organization of Astrophysical Shocks.

There are two distinct regimes of the first-order Fermi acceleration of shocks. The first is a linear (test-particle) regime in which most of the shock energy goes into thermal and bulk motions of the plasma. The second is an efficient regime in which the shock energy goes into accelerated particles. Although the transition region between them is narrow, we identify the factors that drive the s...

Investigations of Lepton and Baryon Acceleration in Relativistic Astrophysical Shocks

Double, Glen Paul. Investigations of Lepton and Baryon Acceleration in Relativistic Astrophysical Shocks. (Under the direction of Donald C. Ellison.) Gamma-ray bursts, occurring randomly each day anywhere in the universe, may be the brightest objects in the sky during their short life. Particle acceleration in mildly relativistic shocks, internal to the main blastwave, may explain the early int...

Quantum electrodynamical shocks and solitons in astrophysical plasmas

The nonlinear propagation of low-frequency circularly polarized waves in a magnetized dusty plasma is analyzed. It is found that wave steepening and shock formation can take place due to the presence of nonlinear quantum vacuum effects, thus giving rise to ultra-intense electromagnetic shocks. Moreover, it is shown that solitary wave structures are admitted even under moderate astrophysical con...

Topical Issues for Particle Acceleration Mechanisms in Astrophysical Shocks

Particle acceleration at plasma shocks appears to be ubiquitous in the universe, spanning systems in the heliosphere, supernova remnants, and relativistic jets in distant active galaxies and gamma-ray bursts. This review addresses some of the key issues for shock acceleration theory that require resolution in order to propel our understanding of particle energization in astrophysical environmen...

Analytical Solutions of Specific Classes of Astrophysical Radiating Shocks

Radiating shocks play a crucial role in astrophysical environments (Mignone 2005) as well as in laboratory plasmas generated by powerful facilities (Drake 2006). In astrophysics, we can find them in the head of stellar and galactic jets (Blondin & Cioffi 1989), in the first phase of supernovae explosions, in the late phase of supernova remnants (Chevalier & Blondin 1995), in accreting systems s...
